Vertical Video for Social Media Content

As Creative Directors, for vertical social media content to complement the colors of "Parade" underwear our vision was to create a stunning garden in the studio. Our process began with a mood board. Yeka and I pulled inspiration together on Pinterest. We discussed the appearance of the set and the color scheme to use. We brought together in all female team starting with a beautiful model, Marla, who was playful and sensual while taking directions. In our Brooklyn studio set designer, Neysha, built "little islands of moss," and used a variety of flowers and chicken wire to create stunning living flower towers for Marla to interact with. The flower set added depth and beauty to our visuals.

Now let's discuss lighting. We used five lights for this shoot. Was that necessary? Yes and no.  We don't always need that many. However, when creating a world and building a set using multiple lights, serves a different purpose. We used continues lights to accommodate both photography and video. We used Aputure colored tubes to give the flowers and Marla’s skin red and blue accents. We aimed to make the set feel bright and sunny with Aputure 600D as the main “key” light. We also lit the background with Nanlite mixpanels to eliminate shadows caused by the main light.

We shot both vertical and horizontal videos. Shooting vertically gave us an idea of what the frame would look like in the final video. However, we also shot horizontal videos as well. Horizontal video from the same shoot can be used in your blog on your website or added to your newsletters as an enticing gif.

When it came to camera movements we incorporated two main ones. One was static on the tripod, and the other was on a gimbal to provide a smooth and beautiful movement, zooming into the product and model. In post-production, using both movements gave us a great balance between static shots and movement shots. Finally, we broke down the footage into multiple short 15-second reels and added a trending song from Instagram in the background.
